Playskool Institute was founded by two former school teachers with the idea that preschool children should benefit from learning toys, hence the name, Play-Skool. The market for teaching toys was excellent and continues to help the Playskool name increase. In the mid-1980’s, Playskool was purchased by Hasbro, which still utilizes the well-known name. Robin Toys
Producer of Roberts Industries

ROBerts INdustries Robin Toys Co. (this is where the name comes from)

After WWII, H. Brittingham Roberts, a successful highway contractor, operated Roberts Industries in Salisbury, MD which manufactured wooden toys, furniture, and radio and television cabinets.  At the time of the Korean War, Roberts Industries converted its facilities to a shipyard to produce wooden LCVP landing craft and some steel LST landing craft for the Navy.  At that time Roberts Industries had about 1,000 employees.  After the war that shipyard facility began producing private boats including the mass production of 16’ mahogany outboard pleasure boats (a very unique undertaking at the time) and did major repair work on commercial fishing vessels for several years. The first date I have for the company is a November 1, 1943 a copyright listing for a tug boat assembly. I also have a May, 1946 Boy’s Life ad for a $10.00 24” pond boat.

Sifo Company
A.K.A. The Sifo Novelty Company

Norway, Michigan
St. Paul, Minnesota
1944 - 1975

Sifo toys were designed to help children build their bodies by simple exercise, their minds through solving simple problems and providing necessary recreation, their motor and mechanical skills through trial and error, repetition and use of memory. They advertised that their wood was cut and sawed in their Norway, Michigan plant which was then sent to St. Paul to be finished. Sifo produced several different pull toys. The good news is that they are always marked with the Sifo name. We have included only a fraction of their toys for reference.
