J. Chein and Company
New York, New York
1903-1987
J. Chein and Company was founded by a one-armed, one-time Vaudeville
performer Julius Chein in his Manhattan loft. The company’s first
productions were metal stamped small toys, including the small tin prize
found in the then new “Cracker Jack” candies. Over the years, in
addition to metal toys, Chein produced toy musical instruments, sand
pails, tin automobiles, noisemakers and also a line of “Nifty” toys
sold by George Borgfeldt and Company, just to name a few. Mr. Chein
became known as an early innovator and creator of metal lithographed
toys. They continued to produce toys until the 1970’s when, under new
direction, started producing tin wastebaskets.
In 1987, the company was sold to Atlantic Products, at which time, the
name was changed to Atlantic Cheinco. The company filed for bankruptcy
in 1992. |
