Hubley Toys

by Richard Mueller Jr.

Hubley Manufacturing Company
Lancaster, Pennsylvania
1894- Present

Hubley Manufacturing Company is one of the oldest and largest makers of toys in the United States. The company originally produced accessories and equipment for electric trains. In 1909, the company added cast iron toys to their inventory. They also produced castings for other companies in Lancaster that did not have foundry equipment. In 1936, Hubley started casting in multiple cavity steel dies with moving assembly lines where parts were painted, added, inspected, etc.

In 1949, with the closing of their foundry, Hubley became one of the first companies with an entire factory designed for die-casting. Hubley Manufacturing Company is well known across the collecting borders since they have produced a while range of toys over the years from farm equipment to banks to automobiles. Most Hubley toys will carry their name, even through sometimes it may be in an inconspicuous place. Hubley is now a division of Gabriel Industries, Inc. of New York. Only a minute group of Hubley’s cast iron toys are shown as examples.
